What is OVpay?
OVpay is the new way to check in and out on public transport. You can use your debit card, credit card, mobile phone, or the new OV-pas. With OVpay, you can travel anywhere in the Netherlands by train, bus, tram, and metro. OVpay is the successor to the familiar OV-chipkaart. This technology is ready for the future. OVpay is a collaboration between Dutch public transport companies, banks, and credit card companies.
What is the new OV-pas?
After almost 20 years, the OV-chipkaart is being discontinued. The OV-pas, together with the debit card, is replacing the familiar OV-chipkaart. With the OV-pas, you can travel anywhere in the Netherlands by train, bus, tram, and metro. You choose how much credit to load onto your card. And you can easily check your costs in your OVpay account: on the website or in the app. This allows you to keep track of your travel expenses. You can purchase the OV-pas via the OVpay website or OVpay app.
If you add your personal details to the OV-pas, the card will be registered in your name. This means you will receive age discounts if you are entitled to them and you can add a subscription. Only you will then be able to travel with your card.
Can you already switch to OVpay?
Do you travel with subscriptions or travel products? The debit card already offers many possibilities. The OV-pas does not yet work for all discount subscriptions or travel products such as 1st class travel. In Almere, all unlimited travel subscriptions are already available on the OV-pas. Discount products will follow shortly.
How the new OV-pas works
- Top up your balance on the OV-pas via the OVpay app.
- Checking in and out is very easy: take your card out of your wallet, hold your card against the reader, and you're checked in or out. It's that simple.
